The Fall Creators Update will introduce many new features such as OneDrive Files On-Demand and Story Remix, but users can also expect many improvements for Windows Inking, Gaming, Security and Accessibility. Terry Myerson, head of the Windows group at Microsoft, promised that this fourth update to Windows 10 would be the best yet.

Microsoft will begin rolling out the Fall Creators Update on October 17, although it's likely to be a staged rollout, with the company testing it on newer devices and gradually pushing it out to others as it gets more feedback. Microsoft is also expected to bring some changes in the UI. Prices for Mixed Reality headsets start at $299 and go up from there.

The Update will also include support for mixed reality, both from headsets and on the PC.

Microsoft's push comes as the USA tech giants - Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Apple and Facebook, along with China's Baidu - increasingly battle to make augmented reality, together with artificial intelligence and cloud-based services, into the next computer platform. Microsoft plans to target these features first at advanced video game players using VR headsets, with business applications to follow, officials said.

Improved Game Mode - let your games use the full processing power of your PC as if it was an Xbox.

Next up, a (very creatively named) feature called "Pick Up Where You Left Off", which lets you start a task on your Windows PC, say editing a Word document, and pick it up on your phone exactly where you left off. The headset will cost $350 with controllers costing an extra $100 each.

The Fall Creators Update will also be the first release that has any widespread adoption of Microsoft's new Fluent Design System, though the adoption of Fluent will be a journey that spans multiple updates. Although presented as mixed reality, this platform is actually entirely virtual.

The update will be rolled out over a number of months, as Microsoft upgrades Windows 10 machines in phases.

If you are using Windows 10 1511 within an organization, Microsoft terminated support at the end of July, so you should be on a supported release such as 1607 or 1703.
