  • More Sony smartphones incoming: Xperia XZ1, XZ1 Compact and XA1 Plus announced at IFA 2017

The Sony Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact may have stolen the show at Sony's big announcement today, but the company's mobile portfolio also gained some affordable competition in the form of the Sony Xperia XA1 Plus.

Talking of features which are rarely found in smaller devices, you've also got the latest Sony audio tech, including Hi-Res Audio, DSEE HX upscaling, LDAC, Digital Noise Cancelling (DNC) and ClearAudio+.

At a cursory glance, the SONY XZ1 looks exactly like its two predecessors, the XZ Premium and the XZ with minor changes in the placement of the camera sensor, buttons and speaker design. It feels remarkably well made.

The devices recieving the update include - Xperia X, Xperia X Performance, Xperia XZ, Xperia X Compact, Xperia XZ Premium, Xperia XZs, Xperia XA1, Xperia XA1 Ultra, Xperia Touch as well as the new Xperia XA1 Plus.

The Xperia XZ1 features a 5.2-inch 1080 x 1920 pixel display with HDR, though the company has not revealed what standard of high dynamic range the phone supports. The 4.6-inch XZ1 Compact arrives the following month for $600.

The device also comes with the traditional IP68 water and dust resistance certificate, NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C 3.1 and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The Xperia XZ1 is powered by the Snapdragon 835 processor paired with the Adreno 540 GPU, 4GB of RAM and a 2,700mAh battery with Qnovo Adaptive charging and Quick Charge 3.0 support. Then again, not really many cared for the Xperia XZ Premium's 4K screen anyway. It has 32GB of inbuilt storage which is expandable up to 256GB via microSD card.

There's a 19MP camera on the back of the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact, just like on other recent Sony flagships. Sony has also announced the SBH24 Stereo Bluetooth Headset and the STH32 Stereo Headset in colours created to "harmonise" with both the Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact handsets. There's nothing to do with the Infinity Display screens you see on the Samsungs and LGs of this world and this gets even worse when it comes to the bezels above and below the screens. Both XZ1 and XZ1 compact will be among the first smartphones to ship with Android 8.0 Oreo pre-installed. The smartphone will be available to purchase from Autumn 2017 in Black, Blue, Gold, and Pink color options.

This, combined with an advanced image sensor, allows for super slow motion video, predictive capture and autofocus burst.

Videos will get Sony's SteadyShot electronic stabilization, but there's no optical image stabilization for photos. The camera is 8Mp and has a 120 degree wide-angle lens so you can fit lots of people in the frame. Each mode will have a guide to help users capture a 3D scan, but the general idea here is that users will simply point their XZ1 cameras at an object and move it around to perform a scan.

For a personalised touch, the Xperia XZ1 has an integrated fingerprint sensor, which Sony has managed to retain on top of the small power button, so you can unlock the device when you pick it up without having to move your hand to a separate button. In Kenya, these prices should translate to about Ksh 70,000 and Ksh 60,000, respectively, but we still don't know when - or if - the phones will hit the Kenyan shelves.
