Oregon Humane Society sends team to help stranded pets during Hurricane Harvey

  • Dozens of dogs in Harvey-affected areas transferred to Humane Society of Pikes Peak Region

PAWS founder Paula Fasseas says the Chicago-area PAWS shelters could hold up to 100 pets, mostly pets that were already in shelters, as opposed to displaced pets that have Texas owners actively looking for them. "They're doing the best they can", one volunteer worker at the shelter told CBS News correspondent Melissa Villarreal. Amanda Anderson, a public relations specialist with Seattle Humane, said the dogs would be available for adoption within 24 to 48 hours.

Along with good samaritans, shelters, and rescue groups are also out rescuing animals that have been left behind.

Shelters in Texas and Louisiana have been deluged by pets displaced by the storm and are sending some of their animals to facilities across the country in an effort to free up space for animals in need.

Animal rescue groups, many unable to reach affected areas because of flooding and blocked roads, said it would take days before the full toll emerged.

The devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey is forcing some to leave their pets behind.

None of the animals being transferred to HES are owned pets, according to a news release. "HRA stands ready to take in animals, regardless of breed, with open arms and we look forward to finding forever homes for them in our nation's capital", Shain said.

One of the most powerful photos of all is surely this one of a man and his pet dog outside his ruined home in the aftermath of the storm.

Tropical Storm Harvey has forced tens of thousands of people from their homes, along with countless pets.

The animal rescue g0t its start after Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana, so when Harvey hit over the weekend plans were quickly put in motion.

Prior to meeting Simpson, Brackman helped rescue a family, including their young children and dog named Ralph, from their flooded house in Houston.

"Right now we're on standby", she said.

The National Weather Service says more than 40 inches of rainfall have fallen in some parts of Texas with another 20 inches possible before the storm moves on.

And at least one law enforcement official intends to make sure it's followed. About two dozen dogs were taken in after 2015 floods in Oklahoma, and during Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

"The dog barked and barked as the water kept rising until the water got high enough and the barks stopped".

"When you saw horses in these stalls that within 30 minutes had water up to their necks, I have never seen anything like that", Bare said.

"Please do not keep your family members tied to a rope or chain", the police department in Montgomery County said on Facebook.
