Nest has launched a low-cost version of its famous smart thermostat aimed at the mid-market and priced at $169.

For $80 less than the Learning Thermostat, the Thermostat E looks like a solid deal, especially if you like the new look.

"We believe the Nest Learning Thermostat is fantastic for the top of customer food chain, versus the more mass-market customer who wants something more approachable that doesn't stand out on the wall as a piece of design - something that just blends in and does its job".

The new Nest Thermostat E is available for $170. Additionally, it comes with a pre-set schedule on when it turns off, which can save energy.

"We set out to create a simpler, more affordable thermostat", Nest's Maxime Veron explains. The new Nest E can do nearly everything the regular Nest can do, save for a feature called "farsight" that allows the thermostat to detect when you're across the room, and then turn on the display to indicate the time or temperature. He remembers one fight he's now glad he lost, over whether to put a larger wall-cover in the box for people who don't want to spackle and paint just to install a new thermostat. That's also why Nest isn't calling this one a "Learning Thermostat" like the previous model, even though the two are functionally identical. Nest's head designer, Sung Bai, feels the new display is "like watercolor". When the display is off, the screen will just look gray. It is also said to be easier to read as the frosted display won't let light in, meaning that you won't have to worry about glare from your other lights. To make this particular Thermostat E forgettable, the Nest has concealed the display behind a glass which blocks the light that is coming through the glass.

The Thermostat E rolls out on September 1.

According to the Nest, its thermostats saved around 14 billion Kwh of energy and also reduced the heating bills of the customers.

The Thermostat E costs only $169.

Nest has introduced new, cut down version of its smart thermostat that parent company Google hopes will appeal to a wider audience.

For its price, users will still get presence detection and integration with third-party services via Works with Nest. Meanwhile, they've dropped a few wiring connections inside that Nest says will limit compatibility to around 85% of U.S. houses rather than 95% - so if you've already checked if the original model will work with your place, you might want to check again here. It supports Google Assistant, of course - Google owns Nest - and Amazon Alexa.
