County game suspended after arrow fired into The Oval

BBC Sport reported that armed police were dispatched to the scene.

There were no reports of injuries.

Cricket fans at the Oval ground have been urged to move inside after what one player described as a "metal tipped arrow" was sacked on to the pitch.

Fans watching cricket at The Oval this afternoon (Thursday, August 31) had to be evacuated and were told to "take cover" after an arrow or crossbow dart was sacked into the field of play during the Surrey's match against Middlesex.

The players were then told by umpires to immediately leave the field, with many running to the changing rooms.

Middlesex Cricket tweeted that a "crossbow bolt landed on the square". According to report, an or crossbow bolt had landed on the pitch during the match.


Surrey cricketer Stuart Meaker said: "We have just officially gone off the field because a metal-tipped arrow just landed on the pitch!"

Police evacuated the ground, with the umpires eventually abandoning the First Division fixture, which was deep into the final day of four, as a draw. "It is believed that the object came from outside of the ground", they said.

Players alerted the officials, with the object coming close to Surrey's Ollie Pope.

Police arrived at the scene soon after and along with the ground staff, also urged fans to take cover.

The match was stopped after the first ball of the 69th over with Middlesex 214 for seven in their second innings.
