  • Heather Hyers Mother Launches A Foundation In Her Daughter's Honor

Partway through the MTV VMAs celebration, Reverend Robert Lee IV and Susan Bro took the stage.

The mother of Heather Heyer - the counter-protestor who was slain in Charlottesville, Va. during a hate-filled white nationalist rally this month - and a descendant of Robert E. Lee came together on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards to denounce racism. "Heather Heyer's mom is speaking out, and Robert E. Lee's [descendant] is out here condemning white supremacy".

Next, Lee introduced someone who knows that pain all too well.

"As a pastor it is my duty to speak out against racism, America's original sin", Rev. Robert Wright Lee IV told the crowd to applause Sunday night, inside the Forum in Inglewood, California.

"We have made him an idol of white supremacy".

Susan Bro's daughter, Heather Heyer, was mowed down by a vehicle driven into anti-racists who were protesting against a rally by white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia, on August 12.

Bro is set to announce the victor of the Best Fight Against the System award, a newly added VMAs category created to reflect "the audience's passion and activism surrounding environmental justice, immigration, LGBTQ equality, and racial justice".

She then announced the formation of the Heather Heyer Foundation, which will carry on the work that the 32-year-old championed in her day-to-day life.

Despite several artist nominations for "Best Fight Against the System" through music, it was later revealed that all five of the nominees won the award in a symbolic gesture of unity. I miss her all the time. Jared Leto and others spoke up about suicide prevention and body shaming. "She's not allowed to speak now except through me", Bro told The Associated Press prior to the ceremony. "Only 15 days ago, my daughter Heather was killed as she protested racism", Bro began. She asked viewers to "make Heather's death count" by visiting the website for the newly formed Heather Heyer Foundation.

The pair were tasked with presenting the prize for Best Fight Against the System, which was awarded equally to all six nominees: John Legend ("Surefire"), Alessia Cara ("Scars to Your Beautiful"), Logic and Damian Lemar Hudson ("Black SpiderMan"), Shailene Woodley and Taboo ("Stand Up/Stand N Rock"), Big Sean ("Light") and Lin-Manuel Miranda ("Immigrants").
