Best Buy Says Viral Photo of $42 Water Was 'a Big Mistake'

  • The canned foods section of a Walmart store was almost empty as people prepared for the arrival of Hurricane Harvey

In a statement, a Best Buy representative told Business Insider the pricing was "a big mistake".

"We feel bad about this because, as a company, we are focused on helping, not hurting people affected by this awful event", the company said.

The company says it's "deeply sorry that we gave anyone even the momentary impression that we were trying to take advantage of the situation". The Best Buy in Cypress, Texas chose to sell bottled water for $42 a pack.

Multiplication led to an inflated figure.

There have been at least 600 complaints of price gouging in the wake of Harvey, a spokeswoman for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton told The Hill.

A photo tweeted by Mr. Klippenstein showed Dasani 24-packs on sale for $42.96 and a "limited supply" of Smartwater 12-packs for $29.98.

Best Buy explained that they don't normally sell water but had made an exemption due to Hurricane Harvey.

Houston resident John McGovern concluded that the attempt of many stores to hike prices in the midst of a national disaster amount to "pure greed".

When the price-gouging incident went viral, the store apologized and said it was the mistake of a few employees.

"The Office of the Attorney General now has received 550 complaints and 225 emails sent to an emergency address set up for consumers, and more are coming in pretty consistently", a media relations official told Grit Post.

"Price gouging is not only reprehensible, it's illegal".

Businesses found guilty of price gouging can face fines of $20,000, according to GritPost.

However, Best Buy could be fined for their actions.
