  • Manohar Parrikar polled 9,862 votes against 5,059 by Girish Chodankar

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar won the bye-poll from his constituency of Panaji on Monday, ANI reported.

After losing two seats to BJP that went to polls in Goa, the Congress on Monday on Monday alleged that the ruling BJP "indulged in corrupt practises".

Arguably, the most crucial win is that of AAP's Ram Chander in Delhi's Bawana as it gave Arvind Kejriwal's party a much-needed psychological boost.

In Andhra Predesh's Nandyal Assembly seat, TDP candidate is leading over YSRCP candidate by more than six thousand votes. Voting was held peacefully in 379 polling stations across the Assembly constituency. The TDP candidate, Bhuma Bramananda Reddy won a little over 50 per cent of the votes polled, defeating his closest rival, Shilpa Mohan Reddy of the YSR Congress in an election that saw a voter-turnout that exceeded 80 per cent.

The ruling party was keen to register its first victory in a bypoll as it lost the previous by election in Rajouri Garden to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The bye-poll results are significant for all there major political parties- BJP, Aam Aadmi Party and Congress-which is being seen as the mood of the voters.

Parrikar was sworn in as the chief minister in March 2017 after the BJP formed a coalition government with Goa Forward Party, MGP and independents.

Bawana bypoll was necessitated after the resignation of Ved Prakash as the legislator in March.

The Congress is also hoping to open its account in the 70-member assembly by winning this seat.

AAP's Ramchandra polled 59,886 votes while Ved Prakash, who polled 1.09 lakh votes in the 2015 polls, managed only 35,834 votes. Having lost Pratapsingh's ambitious son to the BJP, the Congress could well be staring at the loss of at least three seats to the saffron party in this part of interior Goa in the future if it doesn't work to counter the Ranes' influence in the Sattari taluka.

A BJP MLA had resigned from the Panaji seat for Parrikar to contest after he stepped down from the Union defence minister's post to return to Goa as chief minister. Today, he defeated his nearest rival, Congress's Girish Chodankar, by 4,803 votes. He resigned as an MLA, jumped ship and was soon made a minister in the Parrikar government.
