SpaceX sticks another vertical rocket landing at sea

  • SpaceX's twelfth launch and ninth recovery of 2017 ready for a Thursday liftoff

After the rocket puts the FORMOSAT-5 Earth observation satellite into low-Earth orbit, its first stage will attempt to land on a barge in the Pacific Ocean named "Just Read the Instructions".

The satellite was constructed by the Taiwan National Space Organization.

A Falcon 9 rocket lifts off carrying a Taiwanese satellite.

With a picturesque backdrop of a sunny and mostly clear sky, SpaceX successfully launched a Falcon 9 rocket late Thursday morning from Vandenberg Air Force Base.

But getting Formosat-5 aloft was the main point of today's mission. The satellite's primary instrument is an Earth-observing camera system capable of 2-meter (6.5 feet) resolution in black and white, and 4-m (13 feet) resolution in color. SpaceX also had a couple of high-profile accidents, including a second-stage failure during a launch in 2015, and a launch pad accident in 2016.

"Formosat-5 also hosts a secondary scientific payload, an Advanced Ionospheric Probe (AIP), developed by Taiwan's National Central University", they added.

It's hard to believe it was less than two years ago that a SpaceX Falcon 9 landing was an elusive and unprecedented achievement. The larger, more powerful Falcon Heavy rocket is set for a demonstration launch later this year. It will open at 10:30 a.m. and close right before the launch.

This past March, SpaceX reused a Falcon 9 first stage for the first time in a satellite launch from Florida and again successfully landed it.
