Wenger: I want Arsenal successor to outshine me

The newspaper says that Arsenal have made a decision to bow to those demands and have put a deal on the table worth £300,000 a week, with the ball now back in Sanchez's court.

Arsenal have been unable to agree a contract extension with the South American, which has raised the possibility of Sanchez leaving the FA Cup holders this summer.

Former Arsenal player Paul Merson has suggested that Arsene Wenger would be willing to let Sanchez move to PSG because that would make it much less likely for the forward to come back to haunt the Gunners than if he moved to Premier League rivals, Manchester City.

Wenger says that Sanchez will not feature in Arsenal's opening game of the season, against Leicester City on Friday night, and may miss the clash with Stoke City the following weekend.

"He had a scan two days ago and he's out for a while - I don't know if it two weeks or one more week, but he will not be available".

"Personally, I think he is a hugely talented player, he's on the way up and he will continue to move up because the potential is there", he said.

Alexis Sanchez put the cat amongst the pigeons on Sunday - by sending out a tweet which revealed his location to be Paris. "But we have all the other players prepared in pre-season and they are all ready".

Sanchez sustained the injury during a training session ahead of the Community Shield and Wenger admits he is unsure just how long the 28-year-old will be out.

"I felt that to lose would have been bad for us because we had such good preparation and to sit there in the morning and think we had lost at home would have been awful", he said. "When a player goes into the final year of their contract, we will try to extend the contract because there is no reason we shouldn't do it, but we are not there yet".
