Kenyatta declared victor of disputed Kenya presidential vote

  • Kenya's opposition describes Kenyatta's win as a charade and a disaster

Kenyan police have shot two people dead and injured five more during rioting after President Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the victor in national elections.

Protests erupted after opposition leader Raila Odinga alleged that the elections were rigged. "She was my only hope".

Kenyatta emerged victor after securing 54.27 percent of the ballots cast, while his rival, Raila Odinga, won 44.74 percent of official figures released by the country's electoral commission on Friday.

Odinga's ethnic Luo supporters - and their allies from other groups - believe they have been denied political power by elites from the Kikuyus, the same ethnic group as Kenyatta, the country's biggest community. A mortuary official said nine bodies with gunshot wounds were brought to the Nairobi morgue from Mathare.

In statement issued shortly after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission announced Kenyatta as victor of the 8 August general election, Museveni said he is confident that his counterpart Kenyatta will continue with the efforts of promoting unity and development of Kenyans.

"No life should be lost because of an election", said John Oballa Owaa, vice chairman of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Several other people have been killed in clashes between police and rioters since Friday night, when Kenya's election commission announced that President Uhuru Kenyatta was the victor in Tuesday's vote.

Police also used tear gas on a large convoy of vehicles carrying opposition officials that tried to enter Kibera.

A senior member of the opposition coalition (NASA) James Orengo also claimed police had provoked the violence and urged supporters to stay out of harms way.

In Nairobi, a young girl was shot dead by police firing "sporadic shots" at protesters in Mathare, a witness said.

However protests remained isolated today, with several hundred demonstrators engaging in running battles with police who quickly dispersed what Interior Minister Fred Matiangi referred to as "criminal elements".

As celebrations began in pro-government areas after Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the victor of the presidential election, supporters of opposition leader Raila Odinga poured onto the streets in parts of Nairobi and Kisumu to protest the outcome.

Demonstrations have largely taken place in opposition strongholds, but have generated comparisons with the disputed 2007 election which led to two months of ethno-political violence that left 1,100 people dead.
