BBCI: Eggs scandal: European Union food safety chief calls for end to 'blaming'

But it did say that all egg imports undergo "periodic analysis and inspection" at ministry food laboratories, and now meet all approved standards. They had arrived in the western city of Timisoara from Germany.

Photo taken on August 9, 2017 shows eggs sold in a Belgian market, in Brussels, Belgium. Authorities will incinerate the eggs.

The Netherlands is the leading exporter of eggs to the European Union, according to data released by Eurostat.

Luxembourg's government has said that it received eggs from a Belgian producer whose eggs were found to contain Fipronil. The remaining minced meat has been destroyed.

The administration had earlier this week said Denmark was unaffected by the tainted egg scandal spreading across Europe.

About 700,000 eggs have been sent to the United Kingdom from potentially contaminated Dutch farms, up from an early estimate of 21,000, the food watchdog has said.

Twenty tonnes of the contaminated eggs have been sold, according to the Denmark's food safety authority.

The contaminated eggs are likely to have been mixed with non-contaminated eggs, diluting the amount of fipronil that could be consumed.

The Food Standards Agency said it was very unlikely that there was a risk to public health.

Numerous eggs were mixed with others which had not come from affected farms so Fipronil residues would be highly diluted, it added.

While 700,000 eggs sounds like a lot, it is worth remembering we eat 34 million every single day in the UK.

It said some of the products made from these eggs will have had a short shelf life and will have already been consumed, but some were still within the expiry date and were being withdrawn by the businesses involved.

"They are suspected of putting public health in danger by supplying and using fipronil in pens containing egg-laying chickens".

The raids in the Netherlands were carried out as part of a joint action with Belgian authorities.

More than 100 poultry farms were closed during the investigation and at least 26 suspects were identified.

Meanwhile, police in the Netherlands arrested two people Thursday for allegedly using a banned pesticide as the investigation of contaminated eggs continues. She did not provide details on which companies or individuals were targeted.

Earlier this week, Belgian agriculture minister Denis Ducarme accused the Dutch government of negligence for failing to act on an anonymous tip Dutch food safety watchdog NVWA had received about the presence of fipronil as early as November a year ago.

Dozens of poultry farms in Belgium and the Netherlands have been investigated amid the hunt for eggs containing Fipronil, which is unsafe to human health. However, no cases have been reported of people falling sick.

The scandal, which was evident last week with the withdrawal of millions of eggs to supermarkets Dutch and germans, had been brewing for several months.
