  • Aldi stores in Germany stop selling eggs amid Dutch food safety scare

For the World Health Organisation (WHO), fipronil is "moderately toxic" but in high concentrations, it could have unsafe effects on kidney, liver and thyroid gland function.

Commission spokeswoman Anna-Kaisa Itkonen said the aim was "to share the information so that everybody knows that it's now also up to the Swedish, Swiss, French and to the United Kingdom national authorities to check".

The FSA says 85% of eggs consumed in the United Kingdom are produced here.

"We have known since early June there was potentially a problem with fipronil in the poultry sector", Belgium's food safety agency spokeswoman Katrien Stragier told the BBC.

The Food Standards Agency said: "The number of eggs involved represents about 0.0001% of the eggs imported into the United Kingdom each year".

Photo Farm workers discarded eggs in Onstwedde, the Netherlands, last week after concern about insecticide contamination.

Discount supermarket giant Aldi said it was pulling all Dutch eggs from its shelves in Germany over an insecticide scandal that has spread to food stores across Europe.

Authorities in Switzerland and Sweden also said they were tracking shipments and removing eggs, as the impact of the affair widened.

It is believed the substance was introduced to poultry farms by a Dutch business, named Chickfriend, which was called in to treat red lice, a nasty parasite in chickens.

A Dutch farming organisation has said that several million hens may need to be culled at 150 companies in the country, with 300,000 having already been killed.

After Belgium failed to notify the European Union executive immediately on an ongoing investigation to a Belgian company for creating an illegal mite-killer containing fipronil, delayed to break the news to the Berlaymont.

The poultry was then sold to about 180 Dutch farms, which have all had their egg sales stopped temporarily.

The European Commission said on Monday that Germany and the Netherlands notified the EU's food safety alert system on the weekend.

"Fipronil is not authorised for use as a veterinary medicine or pesticide around food producing animals".

It is thought to have been used on chickens in Belgium and could be potentially risky to humans.
