  • Why lone gunman mowed down 8 worshippers in Anambra Catholic Church

Unknown gunmen Sunday morning invaded St. Philip's Catholic Church, Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State and opened fire on worshippers who had attended the morning mass.

"The gunmen came thinking that their target was in the church but incidentally he was not", Umar said, adding that the violence may be linked to drug-trafficking.

Chukwuma Emeka said he had just stepped out of the church to stretch his legs "when I heard gunshots and screaming and people running inside".

"The hospital authority has confirmed 8 persons dead, and 18 injured", the statement published by police said.

"The man after shooting at his targeted victims still went on a shooting spree, killing and wounding other worshippers, " he said.

He said that they later went on rampage and shot at the remaining worshippers numbering over 100.

According to media accounts, several people were killed in the church while others who were critically injured died on the way to the Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital located in Nnewi, the second largest city in the state.

Anambra Governor Willie Obiano visited the attack site and condemned it as "dastardly".

The commissioner said information available to police showed that the attacker was speaking undiluted Igbo Language at the time he was firing at worshippers.

The rebellion has killed at least 20,000 people and forced some 2.6 million others to flee their homes, sparking a dire humanitarian crisis in the country's northeast. "I pray that God grants the soul of the departed eternal rest as I urge the security agents to fish out the perpetrators and make them face the law", he said.

"From our findings, it is very clear that the person who carried the attack must be an indigene of the area", he said.
