Facebook shuts down AI chat robot 'after it invents its own language'

  • Facebook shuts down AI program after bots start to communicate in their own language

And over the last month, their researchers have been working closely with these AI bots, which they named Alice and Bob, to get a better sense of how their linguistic ability affects their greater goals of negotiation. Soon, the bots began to deviate from the scripted norms and started communicating in an entirely new language which they created without human input, media reports said.

Facebook researchers in NY set up Bob and Alice, in a bid to develop automated trouble-shooters for social media networks. The language, not part of the bot's core algorithm, was created from scratch without human involvement.

"'Robot intelligence is dangerous": Expert's warning after Facebook AI "develop their own language'", says the Mirror.

The freakish discussions came as Facebook challenged its chatbots to try and negotiate with each other over a trade, attempting to swap hats, balls and books, each of which were given a certain value.

"While the idea of AI agents inventing their own language may sound alarming/unexpected to people outside the field, it is a well-established sub-field of AI, with publications dating back decades", writes Batra.

Clearly it also very much depends on what the AI system is responsible for - swapping imaginary balls and hats might be innocuous, but what would happen if bots were able to negotiate medicine or weapons using non-human syntax?

AIs may or may not be a big threat-completely related, I'm shopping my first novel, a post-cyberpunk SciFi tale of AIs, nanites, and coffee-but Facebook pulled the plug on their runaway AIs before they could negotiate a plot to destroy humanity.

Alice: balls have zero to me to me to me to me... The robots had the task of negotiating to exchange various virtual objects.

"Agents will drift off understandable language and invent codewords for themselves", Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research division's visiting researcher Dhruv Batra told The Independent.

While the AI did not do anything radical like most people expect it to, it developed a new language and started using it instead of using English and thus defying the objective. "Like if I say "the" five times, you interpret that to mean I want five copies of this item".

Tech giant Facebook reportedly shut down an artificial intelligence (AI) engine after it started speaking to itself in a made up language.

Fast forward to now, and those collaborative artificial intelligences have come up with some shortcuts to that process. We mere humans are incapable of understanding the conversation.
