Travellers passing through Australia's airports have encountered huge lines and delays, thanks to the beefed-up security measures implemented after the foiling of an alleged terror plot.

Australian Federal Police Commissioner Andrew Colvin said the men arrested were allegedly linked to an Islamist-inspired plan to detonate an improvised explosive device.

"We believe we have disrupted a legitimate and credible attempt to attack an aircraft", Colvin told reporters without elaborating. Turnbull said some of these measures will be obvious to the public while others may not be.

Flying back into Brisbane from Sydney on Sunday morning with her two daughters, Elyse Wallace said she faced long queues while departing, but was happy to arrive home on time.

"There will be lots of speculation around about what the intent was, but obviously all of us have been working hard over recent days and we rely upon the expertise of the federal police and [other agencies]", said Peter Dutton, a minister who will soon oversee all of Australia's domestic security arrangements.

Sydney Airport has put on extra staff to manage the delays.

Speaking to Sky News, Justice Minister Keenan said that security would be tightened for the foreseeable future, causing delays for both domestic and worldwide travellers, but they would ensure that Australia's "world-leading" security and intelligence agencies can keep people safe.

It added that it was not yet known whether the flight number was related to the alleged terror plot.

Travellers flying on domestic flights were warned by carriers including Qantas to arrive at airports at least two hours before their scheduled domestic flight and three hours for worldwide flights.

The plot involved smuggling the device onto a flight from Sydney to the Middle East, possibly Dubai, as carry-on luggage, the newspaper said.

Queues have also been experienced at Adelaide Airport.

"(Security measures) will be required for as long as the threat is assessed as requiring them".

The country's national terrorism threat level is still at "probable".

"We do believe it is Islamic-inspired terrorism", he said. Five plots have been executed.
