  • England vs South Africa Live Score 3rd Test Day 1 England play South Africa in 100th Test at The Oval

Jennings was 34 not out and Tom Westley, one of three debutants in England's XI, unbeaten on 28 in what is the 100th Test at The Oval.

The left-hander saw an edge off Philander fly past Dean Elgar at third slip when he had six to his name and was later adjudged lbw to Kagiso Rabada for 33, only for the decision to be overturned on review due to the ball pitching outside leg stump.

And he once again had to leave the field on Friday after bowling five overs, although he did leave with figures of 2/32 from his 17 overs.

But South Africa moved past the follow-on mark of 153 without him, during Bavuma (52) and Morne Morkel's ninth-wicket stand of 47 in this third Investec Test.

South Africa resumed Saturday on 126 for eight, still needing a further 28 runs to avoid the follow-on, after England made 353 in their first innings.

South Africa will assess Vernon Philander's condition before he is cleared to continue in the third Test with England after the seamer spent the night in hospital.

Bavuma reached fifty with a streaky boundary through the slips cordon, having earlier enjoyed a life when Ben Stokes dropped a tough chance in the gully, but the South African was eventually Roland-Jones' fifth victim, edging through to Jonny Bairstow behind the stumps.

The worth of his more than three-hour innings was acknowledged by South Africa captain Faf du Plessis, who led the applause from the dressing room balcony.

England lost Cook shortly after lunch when he was bowled by an excellent delivery from fast bowler Morkel for just seven.

Westley drove the ball beautifully as he quickly asserted himself and he appears to have put himself in front of Gary Ballance who was supposed to return for the final Test in Manchester next week.
