  • Kern County unemployment rate inches up in June

The number of unemployed, defined as workers without a job who actively sought one in the past month, dropped to 67,200 in June.

The state's unemployment is almost half the national unemployment rate, which increased one-tenth of a percentage point in June to 4.4 percent.

But while job gains improved the first half of this year compared with last, the agency expressed concerns that the size of the labor force has declined for the fourth consecutive month.

"This was the fourth consecutive decline in labor force, which is now at its lowest level in IL since March of 2006", Gough said. That's 12,000 more than the month before, but the labor force total also grew by a large amount.

"It is typical for the unemployment rate to increase during this time of year", says Welch. The education and health services sector decreased by 1,000 jobs in June.

Iowa saw a slight uptick in unemployment last month. Gedney speculates the department's numbers for mining and logging employment are likely being underestimated.

The June 2017 rate also was down three-tenths of a percentage point from the June 2016 figure, 4 percent.

"Right now, the over-the-year growth isn't negative", he said. Most of the growth was in professional and business services, leisure and hospitality, and government, according to preliminary estimates released Thursday by the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

Illinois' unemployment rate is still three-tenths of a percentage point behind the national average.

"Colorado has a very low unemployment rate and is gifted with a great economy", Acosta said.

The state added 8,600 jobs in June, including 900 in manufacturing.
