Nintendo's Switch mobile app is now available

20 July, 2017, 00:31 | Author: Lloyd Doyle

Nintendo Switch's much talked about mobile application has finally arrived and is available for download on both iOS and Android devices. That means it's easy to squeeze in a round or two when you otherwise probably wouldn't have time to play another game. That requires specialised cable connections or splitters, which some peripheral makers already offer, but not every headset is compatible with out of the box, so confirm yours works before diving in for a competitive Splatoon 2 session this Friday. SplatNet 2 will also give players quick access to statistics, check out what stages will be coming up in the rotation, and summon friends to the game using social media.

Regardless, if you want to get ahead of the game, you can go ahead and grab it right now.

The last sentence reveals bad news on Switch voice chat. For starters, the in-app voice chat lobby is presented with typical Nintendo verve.

At the moment, Splatoon 2 is sitting at a very healthy 84 out of 100 score on Metacritic. The co-operative "salmon run" mode tasks you with fighting off waves of enemies with up to three other players.

You can buy awesome glasses from the app, so there is that. The most notable instance of the device's painfully old-fashioned ways is the Switch's approach to voice chat. The organization hit the trigger a bit early although Nintendo stock previously dated the service for July 21, so Switch owners can download it now.

Online play is free through the end of the year. That may sound rather obvious, but at a time when most devices that play video games are trying to become the centerpiece of your home entertainment system, playing a device that is nearly entirely created to just play video games is a simple pleasure that is far more enjoyable than it should be. But sadly, the app's benefits are massively outweighed by its cumbersome set-up at present, and Nintendo will need to do some mighty big improving if it expects people to pay for this next year. As for the third-party front, the situation is slowly improving even though a few developers still seem hesitant to get on board.
