The highest-paid actor at the BBC is Derek Thompson, who plays Charlie in Casualty.

BBC Breakfast host Naga Munchetty was paid between £150,000 and £199,999 but co-presenter Dan Walker took home between £200,000 and £249,999, though he also does sports coverage.

He defended his £400,000-a-year salary and claimed he had turned down higher offers from the broadcaster's rivals to remain at the BBC.

But the extensive list does not include every BBC star, with names including Jeremy Paxman, David Dimbleby, and Emily Maitlis being noticeably absent from the newly released document.

Chris Evans, former Top Gear presenter and Radio 2 host, topped the list, earning between £2.2 million and £2.25 million (US$2.87 million and US$2.93 million) in 2016/2017. And radio host Chris Evans, the broadcast network's chief earner, takes home more than $2.9 million - about 20 times the salary of the United Kingdom prime minister.

By April 2018, all companies with 250 or more employees will have to publish figures showing average pay for men and women including any bonuses.

'This whole BBC salary exposure business is an absolute outrage... I blame my agent and the other TV channels that pay more. Now where did I put my tin helmet?'

Former soccer player Gary Lineker, now presenter of a hugely popular soccer programme on the, has said he could have made more money working elsewhere.

The report also raised issues about race, as the BBC's elite band of earners are overwhelmingly white in addition to overwhelmingly male.

Radio 2 host Chris Evans topped the table, in a salary bracket of £2,200,000 - £2,249,999.

Hall said the BBC secured value for money because performers were drawn to the public broadcaster because of its reputation and audience reach.

"At the moment, of the talent earning over £150,000, two-thirds are men and one-third are women", Hall said.

BBC director general Tony Hall did point out at a press conference that Sarah Montague is not the lowest paid Today presenter, saying: "I don't want to talk about individuals when it comes to the Today programme but let me just say that you would be wrong to say that the lowest paid member of the presenting team was a woman".

He added that it was "probably right and proper that people know what we get paid" and said that the publication of the figures today would mark the beginning of pay disparities - such as unequal pay between men and women - being "redressed".

The list reveals a major gender imbalance among the BBC's top earners.

"The BBC is hugely proud of our content and shows - and of those who make and appear on them".

The state broadcaster "fought tooth and nail" to resist revealing the sums that licence fee payers are forking out to television personalities, a ministerial source told the Daily Mail.

This morning, the BBC did something bold - it published the salaries of its top earners (defined as anyone making 150,000 pounds - the equivalent of about $195,000 - or more).
