Chris Froome Can't Get Comfortable in Yellow

17 July, 2017, 18:53 | Author: Lula Armstrong

Statistic, quote and fact of the day after the 15th stage of the Tour de France, a 189.5-km ride from Laissac-Severac L'Eglise on Sunday.

After the summit, the Dutchman Bauke Mollema has emerged to reach the finish solo.

Froome now leads the race by 19sec from Aru with Romain Bardet third at 23sec having also lost four seconds to Froome in the finish, although gained two on the yellow jersey.

Aru was the big victor in Peyragudes, where he took the yellow jersey for the first time after Froome cracked in the last 500 meters of the stage.

Ulissi finished second ahead of Gallopin in third, with Warren Barguil, who claimed most of the King of the Mountain points and victor of Friday's Bastille Day 13th stage, fourth at 23 seconds.

CHRIS FROOME stormed back into the Yellow Jersey and is ready to go to war all the way to Paris to keep it this time.

Froome was dropped because of a mechanical problem on his bike ahead of the last big climb of the day.

This year's race has shown that big time gaps over a single stage are nearly impossible to gain amongst the leaders, meaning they must seize every opportunity that comes along, no matter how small. Just before the climb I had a problem with my back wheel, it was damaged. "After the last ascent, I noticed how exhausted everyone was and how they kept looking at each other, so I said to give it a try".

Aru suffered the blow of losing one of the strongest Astana riders, Jakob Fuglsang, during the stage, the last of two in the Pyrenees.

Rather than stay with his team leader, Landa accelerated away to try to win the stage.

But on the ramp in Rodez he turned his six secs deficit into an 18 secs lead over Italy's Fabio Aru who gave up the coveted maillot jaune with a whimper.

"I think that with the two consecutive stages in the Alps and the finish in altitude, there could be big gaps", said Bardet, Froome's runner-up a year ago.

But Froome made a point of thanking him for coming back from the favourites' group to help his leader.

Saint-tienne - But for a crash a week ago, Dan Martin could be wearing the Tour de France yellow jersey instead of Chris Froome, but the Irishman is unfazed by what might have been.

"I am feeling better and better as the race goes on".

"I thought I might not see the lead again".

You know who's in the top 10 overall, but what about the race's other competitions?

Bardet's AG2R La Mondiale team had upped the pace as the category one Peyra Taillaide approached with 40km left, and had already distanced Froome once before the Team Sky man was forced to pull over.

He then rode hard from there to the finish, catching some riders from the early break and taking 14 seconds out of the other general classification contenders.

"That was extremely stressful, panic stations really". "There were attacks, people tried to attack me several times but I responded every time".
