Fowler, who won the Scottish Open when it was held at Gullane, missed the 2016 tournament because of scheduling conflicts arising from the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, which clogged up the golfing calendar last summer.

"I know we didn't necessarily talk about the game out there but I know he's in a great spot with his personal life".

"I also enjoy playing the week before the Majors just to get myself ready to go, tick off some boxes".

"Sadly, due to personal reasons I've had to withdraw from this week's Scottish, which was a real shame", Els wrote in his weekly newsletter.

Rory McIlroy is recreating his British Open build-up from 2014 in an attempt to rediscover some form for another shot at the claret jug at Royal Birkdale next week.

"I was a little bummed that we weren't able to make it back past year with some schedule conflicts, but after getting the win here in 2015 at Gullane, I always love playing over here in Scotland", Fowler told reporters.

" But it's not going to change me and there's no point in me fighting it at this stage".

"To be back here on a handsome day, it's easy to remember last summer, of course, and what I managed to accomplish a little bit down the road there", said Stenson.

"I feel like all I need is, if I can get a little spark this week and see a few putts go in and shoot a couple of good scores, I feel like that will build a lot of confidence and that will ease that impatience a little bit, I guess". "Unfortunately I had to miss it previous year with the schedule, and the Olympics being part of the summer over here - it just didn't allow me to play".

He had drifted back to 153rd in the rankings before winning the Portugal Masters in October 2016, but believes any future wins will not come as such a surprise.

"But now I'll shift my focus to the tournament here. It's part of the ups and downs and I'll just patiently wait for the ups".

Scott has practised already at Royal Birkdale, venue for next week's Open Championship, and will from Thursday tee it up on the Scottish west coast for the $7 million event being staged for the first time on the Dundonald links.

Noren, who turned 35 on Wednesday, tees up in the first round sitting in ninth place in the world rankings having captured a ninth Tour title in May courtesy of a sizzling final day and equal career low round of 62 that saw him win the BMW PGA Championship.
