Verizon Data of at Least Six Million Users Leaked Online

  • Here we go again Verizon’s data leak will make you mad

The PIN codes are data pieces used by Verizon customers to confirm their identity when calling into the service center.

Initial reports of the breach indicated 14 million accounts were exposed, but Verizon told CNN that the number was 6 million.

Nice Systems, the Israeli firm responsible for the breach, said in a statement that a fat-fingered staffer was to blame. The data was collected over the last six months.

According to ZDNet, the data compiled from customer calls is stored by NICE Systems in efforts to analyze and better customer service experiences.

The main fear, according to the experts, was that Verizon Pin numbers in the trove of exposed data could be used to trick Verizon operators into letting hackers access personal accounts.

Customer information is confidential because it contains home addresses, emails, phone numbers, and in some cases even payment information like credit card details.

In response to the leak, Dan O'Sullivan, a Cyber Resilience Analyst with UpGuard, advised that Verizon customers change their PIN codes to protect themselves from scammers. An ill-configured security setting on a cloud server led to having the subscriber data of millions of Verizon customers who phoned customer service in the last six months visible online without protection. This data was publicly accessible to anyone who had the "easy-to-guess" URL, the security firm said.

Chris Vickery, a known security researcher who is now working with the security firm UpGuard, first noticed this data on June 13. The security hole was plugged by June 22.

The leak was discovered on June 8th by UpGuard, who disclosed it to Verizon five days later.

Data belonging to at least 6 million Verizon subscribers were leaked online due to an unprotected Amazon Web Services server.

What you may not know is that you are not actually speaking to Verizon directly.

While expressing regret and apologizing to their customers, a Verizon spokesperson told CNBC that, "As a media outlet recently reported, an employee of one of our vendors put information into a cloud storage area and incorrectly set the storage to allow external access".

Another day, another security breach: researchers at UpGuard have revealed that Verizon suffered a fairly massive data leak, exposing personal information on millions of customers.
