Composed Konta quells Garcia to make history at home

  • Johanna Konta will aim to become Britain's first Wimbledon women's semi-finalist since Virginia Wade in 1978 when she faces Simona Halep on Tuesday

But at 5-4 down, Garcia's resolve finally cracked when she walloped an easy forehand into the net to hand the tie to Konta on her one and only match point. But again Konta showed her remarkable mettle and focus, as well as her power and consistency, to overcome a skilful opponent.

"I've said it time and time again, I can only go out there and do the best that I can". She (Garcia) has been in impressive form and it was hard to find a rythm.

The Australian Open 2016 semifinalist Konta needed two hours and 12 minutes to advance into the quarterfinals at Wimbledon for the first time.

Konta, serving for the set, saved two break points and then squandered a set point of her own, but her frustration grew moments later when Garcia clinched the game with a successful challenge.

However, she lost tamely to Halep in a controversial Fed Cup tie in April, during which Konta was reduced to tears by the behaviour of Romanian team captain Ilie Nastase and a braying mob in Constanta. The home favourite raced into a 3-0 lead, then hit a brilliant forehand victor with Garcia at the net.

"Konta is a pretty good player".

Her level dipped in the second as French star Garcia's rose, and at 5-1 it looked a foregone conclusion.

Garcia should have closed the gap to one but her drive volley was met with a sizzling forehand pass and instead Konta served out the set with an ace.

Much like Konta's epic match with Vekic, by the third set the two players were exhausted and the set looked to be going entirely with serve.

"I'm stronger, also mentally and my game".

Sydney and Miami 2017 champion Konta is now set to play against the victor between Romanian Simona Halep, seeded No.2, and Belarus Victoria Azarenka, former World No.1.
