The smartphone app to which Nintendo has delegated the bulk of the Switch's online services has been dated for a July 21 release, right alongside the launch of Splatoon 2.

The Nintendo Switch Online app will allow users to invite other players with the same game via an iPhone (and presumably other smartphones and mobile devices), and will also include built-in voice chat functionality for at least some games.

Newcomers Marina and Pearl, which aren't fully replacing Callie and Marie (as they're still confirmed to be part of the game), will be hosting Splatoon 2's first Splatfest - but there's a twist.

The company said the Nintendo Switch Online app would be available both for iOS and Android.

With the free version of the Nintendo Switch Online app, gamers will gain access to a Splatoon 2 companion service. When it does, you'll be able to order gear using in-game money, and then pick up your purchases next time you play!

With the advent of Nintendo Switch Online, there's a good chance that other games such as Rocket League won't have built-in voice chat capabilities, forcing audio through a smartphone.

SplatNet 2 is a new mobile app that integrates with Splatoon 2. It looks like friends can be invited from your social media contacts, your Nintendo Switch Friends List, or from a list of people you've battled against previously.

For even more details about the game and what other fresh extras it offers, check out the Direct broadcast below. It would be interesting to see how many third-party games take advantage of Nintendo's app. 3 and Dr. Mario from the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). For now, however, Nintendo is letting owners test some of those features for free, at least until the paid service launches in full next year. Duelies have also seen to work with a new dodge roll capability that will help you to get out of the way of an attack before returning fire yourself. While Nintendo's services can't directly be compared to those of Microsoft and Sony's, these two giants charge $59.99 for the annual online subscription.

In about 20 minutes, Nintendo will air a Splatoon 2 Nintendo Direct.
