  • Wildfire north of Breckenridge prompts evacuations

Officials report that eight USFS smokejumpers parachuted in to the area, two heavy tankers have been making slurry runs, there is a type one helicopter dropping water and more ground resources are on the way.

A wildfire has scorched about 60 acres (24.3 hectares) and forced residents from their homes near the Colorado mountain town of Breckenridge. The base of the resort, which includes hotels, restaurants and businesses, was not evacuated.

The Summit County Sheriff's Office and Breckenridge Police Department have been patrolling the Peak 7 neighborhood to inform the residents about the evacuation order.

There are a host of crews already working the fire and almost 130 personnel, including eight smoke jumpers, a 20-person hotshot crew, two 20-person Type II hand crews, two helicopters being used to drop water, and multiple local fire agencies.

No injuries have been reported, and no structures have been destroyed as a result of the fire; no highway closures have been issued. Evacuation orders were expected to remain in place until midday Thursday. There was seven percent containment as of Thursday afternoon.

The advisory followed a National Weather Service warning for high fire danger in western Nevada and in California's Alpine and Mono counties.

Officials say a wind shift helped them keep the fire from burning toward Breckenridge.

"We're stretched thin because we have so many fires going on all at once", he said.

The fire was reported in the area of Gold Hill shortly after 3:30 p.m. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
