Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova is through to the second round after beating Johanna Larsson 6-3 6-4.

Kvitova will next face the victor of the contest between American Madison Brengle and Richel Hogenkamp of the Netherlands.

The event will be Kvitova's third tournament after recovering from serious injuries suffered during a stabbing attack in December and the 27-year-old won her pre-Wimbledon grass tournament at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham last month.

The Czech shrugged off the assertion she is the favorite to win without Serena in the draw.

"I got to play against two grand slam champions, the reigning French Open champion, and also the number one player in the world".

Even Serena Williams was getting in the Wimbledon groove on Monday - and she was nowhere near the London grasscourts. However, the 23-year-old reached the final at Wimbledon in 2015, and exited in the quarter-finals at this year's Australian Open. This year, however, she enters the draw as a completely different player who has a chance of being the world No 1 for the first time in her career post the Championships.

She only made it to the second round previous year for the first time, and amazingly draws Su-Wei Hsieh for the second time in a Slam.

"But on a fast surface such as grass I think she can do really well", Mouratoglou added.

"I've been through a very hard time in my life". She pulled up with ice in Birmingham after just one round on the grass, and she has a tough start with Birmingham finalist Ashleigh Barty, the always unsafe Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in the third round before maybe the reigning French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko before she gets there.

"It's very open. So who knows who is going to win".

Kerber, who starts against Irina Falconi, needs to improve dramatically after making unwanted history when her defeat against Ekaterina Makarova made her the first top-ranked woman in the Open era to fall in the opening round at Roland Garros.

Madrid Open victor Simona Halep, French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, five-time Wimbledon victor Venus Williams and Britain's very own Johanna Konta are also among the contenders.

Last week, she took to Twitter to ask John McEnroe for "respect" after the seven-times grand slam champion said his fellow American would be ranked "like 700 in the world" if she had to play on the men's circuit. And, who will be the player who will be the upset of the tournament? "I'm not thinking about Paris and the clay-court season anymore".
