Trump's Investigation Into Voter Fraud Is About To Get Underway

  • Trump's Investigation Into Voter Fraud Is About To Get Underway

President Donald Trump's commission on election integrity is asking all 50 states and the District of Columbia for data from state voter rolls and California already sent a message right back refusing to do so.

Like other states, Minnesota received a letter from President Donald Trump's Election Integrity Commission on Thursday requesting detailed information about state voters, including their party information and ten years of their voting history.

The letter also requests "full voter rolls" that include full name, party affiliation, and the last four digits of the voter's social security number, as noted by Washington Post reporter Christopher Ingraham on Twitter.

Denise Merrill, Connecticut's secretary of state, said she would provide "publicly available information" to the commission, but sharply criticized Kobach, who she said "has a lengthy record of illegally disenfranchising eligible voters in Kansas". "It's not a public record".

He says he doesn't plan to cough up personal identifying information of voters to the task force unless it's already available to the public.

Several states, including MA, have said their voter information is private and will not be shared.

In an executive order issued in May, Trump created the commission, to be headed by Vice President Mike Pence, to examine laws, policies and practices "that undermine the American people's confidence in the integrity of the voting processes used in federal elections" and to come up with recommendations to address what Trump called "vulnerabilities" in voting systems. Vermont's top election official, Democrat Jim Condos, said it goes beyond what the state can publicly disclose.

But Dunlap, a Democrat, agreed to join it in May, saying while he expects the commission to find little evidence of fraud, his attitude about serving was "that if you're not at the table, you're on it".

On the other hand, Missouri Attorney General Jay Ashcroft, a Republican, called the request "fair" and said his state looks forward to working with Kobach, according to the Kansas City Star.

Simon said he serious concerns and about the commission's "credibility and trustworthiness". The Commission itself is a distraction from the real issue of voter suppression, and that efforts to "investigate voter fraud' threaten our most fundamental voting rights".

California Secretary of State Alex Padilla said on Thursday that handing over information would only serve to legitimize debunked claims of widespread voter fraud.

This week, the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law announced the launch of a special effort to safeguard the rights of voters in the wake of the Election Integrity Commission. Others, however, said they would not comply with the request in protest of Trump's establishment of the commission, which some have accused of being a voter suppression tool.

The White House press office did not return a request for comment on this story. "Governor McAuliffe can not justify his actions here, given Virginia's track record of harboring thousands of non-citzen voters and his personal veto record that kept common-sense voter registration maintenance procedures from becoming law".

"In addition to winning the Electoral College in a landslide, I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally", Trump tweeted after the election.

While civil liberties advocates are concerned with what Kobach might do after assembling what amounts to a nationwide voter file, privacy advocates worry about the implications of making such data available to the public, as the commission says it intends to do.
