The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously this week to approve environmental reviews for the MAD Architects-designed Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. (Courtesy MAD Architects) The $1 billion museum is created to sit on two large piers, with museum and park programs elevated above the site.

Before that unanimous vote, George Lucas himself chose to address the city council, explaining to them why he had chosen Los Angeles when the museum was not welcomed in his home town. Construction is scheduled to start by early next year with an opening date tentatively set for 2021. It will be built adjacent to Lucas's alma mater, the University of Southern California. The museum won't just be a shrine to the works of George Lucas however, and will include concept art and works from others in the field of the narrative arts.

Exhibits likely to attract Star Wars fans include Luke Skywalker's first light saber and Darth Vader's helmet.

The council vote was 14-0. The museum is a gift to the city of Los Angeles, and will come with an endowment of at least $400 million. "That's where I learned my craft".

Lucas told the City Council: 'For a very brief time, I actually grew up here, especially where the museum is going to be - at USC. (Courtesy MAD Architects) The museum will occupy the site of a current parking lot and will contain a theatre and exhibition spaces along its ground floors. The museum will show the evolution from cave paintings to digital art and much more, and will be geared towards the younger generations in hopes of inspiring them.

Chicago had originally been a frontrunner to house the museum before receiving negative reaction from the public, according to the Chicago Tribune. "The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will add another world-class institution to our city's cultural landscape, and bring a breathtaking architectural jewel to Exposition Park".

Its directors claim they will change the way people see museums with their cutting-edge technology, educational opportunities for all ages, and daily film screenings.
