  • German Chancellor Angela Merkel bottom left attends the transmission of a speech of US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross on screen during a reception of the Economy Council of the German Christian Democratic Party in Berlin Germany Tuesday

Ross' video feed at the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) conference was faded out after roughly twenty minutes for going over his time limit, according to Bloomberg.

German Chancellor #Angela Merkel has announced the resumption of European Union and United States negotiations on a #Free Trade Agreement that was postponed after #Donald Trump became the U.S. president.

Merkel said, "I use it sometimes. then I enter Donald Trump on Twitter and I have it all" — a remark that drew big laughs from the audience at a Berlin theater where the chancellor was interviewed.

The episode comes in the wake of escalating tension between the USA and Germany.

Mr Ross has previously said he hoped to complete by the end of June a national security study of the U.S. steel industry that could result in broad new steel import restrictions. The Trump administration made a "conscious decision not to walk away from" the proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, Ross said.

THE US might have no choice but to resort to "broad-scale" measures to fight steel dumping should its partners fail to help find a common solution to the problem, US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said on Tuesday.

Germany's Economy Ministry later weighed in to the debate, saying Ross's criticism "contained nothing new" and dismissing a report he is compiling on the potential risks to the US of steel imports - a document that Germany fears could have grave consequences for its own steel industry.

Germany's trade surplus over the USA - which amounted to around $65 billion in 2016 - creates jobs for Americans, according to Merkel. "Very bad for U.S. This will change".

Merkel also spoke about a "life-changing experience" she had while meeting a lesbian couple who have adopted eight children. "Trade is not something where the one side wins and the other side loses".

"We will have controversial discussions at the G-20 summit", said Merkel, who's seeking a fourth term as chancellor in Germany's election on September 24.
