  • Some NYC subways suspended after power outage, possible train derailment

Passengers were evacuated through dark subway tunnels after a New York City subway train went off the rails near a station in Harlem.

Video shows scared passengers being escorted out of a trapped subway carriage following the derailment as hundreds had to be evacuated.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority says an investigation is under way after an A train derailed near the 125th Street station this morning. The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) said they are on the scene of the incident in Harlem. Other commuters reported the train crashed and that there was smoke and sparks. Passengers were evacuated and employees of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) arrived on the scene to examine the auto.

MTA chair Joe Lhota and Executive Director Veronique Hakim announced that they would head to 125th Street, where they will likely face questions about the response to the incident that left some passengers shaken.

The B and C trains have been halted altogether. "People were falling", said passenger Susan Pak, of Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.

A total of 34 people were injured. Lhota said the emergency braking system on the train triggered, but it wasn't immediately clear why. But when he said that there was smoke on the tracks, that's when we became more concerned.

The train bucked forward and backward, causing two of the train's eight cars to derail and scrape the side of the wall, Lhota said.

There is no B train service between Brighton Beach and 145 St in both directions. MTA sources say one auto may have derailed, but the sources can not confirm a derailment at this time. "It wasn't heavy smoke, but it was frightening", he said.

The number of subway delays has tripled in the past five years, to 70,000 per month. "People were falling", said passenger Susan Pak, of Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. Fire officials estimate that as many as 500 of the 800 people stuck on trains after the power outage exited the train into the tunnel on their own.

This is a breaking news story.
