Trump lashes out at Democrats after Georgia win

23 June, 2017, 00:56 | Author: Brittany Bishop

The more than $30 million spent by Democrats to boost Jon Ossoff's campaign wasn't enough for a win in the special election in Georgia's 6th Congressional District that went to Republican Karen Handel by a larger than anticipated margin.

Democrats came close but still lost in special elections in Kansas, Montana, Georgia and SC.

Republicans can also now breathe a sigh of relief with the knowledge that they can still win in the kind of affluent, educated districts that often favor Democrats - even with a president who has divided voters in their own party.

The California Democrat has always been a bogeywoman Republicans have used to motivate their base and to woo independents as the personification of liberal values and a reminder of why even if they may like their individual member or candidate, a vote for that Democrat would be a step toward putting Pelosi back in the speaker's chair. Party leaders profess encouragement from the trends, but the latest losses mean they will have to rally donors and volunteers after a tough stretch of special elections.

Pelosi "consistently polls very unfavorably", said John Rogers, the executive director of the National Republican Congressional Committee - the House GOP's campaign arm. "Nancy Pelosi is not the only reason that Ossoff lost. He didn't live in the district", added Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.). "I think that in certain areas, like in some of these special election districts, it doesn't benefit our candidates to be tied to her".

Still, the election results do tell us something about this moment.

"Clearly Karen Handel defended us on [healthcare] and ran on 'We need to get this stuff done".

"What's really important is that Donald Trump has seized the narrative back, that he's doing better with the voters than Democrats think he is", he said.

Tuesday was a triumphant night for Republicans, winning 4 of 5 special elections, including the most expensive House race in US history.

In a post Wednesday afternoon, the 71-year-old "Believe" singer said that unlike the Olympics, there are "no medals" given to second-place finishers in congressional elections. Several won re-election previously despite having more Democratic voters than Republicans in their districts.

Senator Chris Murphy of CT told MSNBC that Democrats needed to focus on economic growth and "get back to being a big tent party".

"If we had even a little Democrat support, just a little, like a couple of votes - you would have everything", he told the crowd. "And we better focus", Ryan said.

The hotly contested race between Handel and Ossoff for the House seat that was vacated by Tom Price, Trump's secretary of health and human services, was seen as an early signal for the 2018 midterm elections, and viewed by some as a referendum on the Trump administration.

Vulnerable Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-Fla.), a top 2018 Democratic target who voted for ObamaCare repeal in May, also called the Georgia victory a "surprise" and "impressive win". But he said there is no doubt that "this is one occasion when we ought to say he deserves to take a victory lap". "Either you run scared or unopposed".

The Democratic panic is warranted. Republicans have won all four of the four special elections that have been held under President Trump. "I think that shows that people have serious questions about whether the Trump agenda is working for them. [.] I'm not looking at this as a loss, I'm looking at it as slow progress".
