Megyn Kelly Vs. Alex Jones: 3.5 Million Watched

  • Television journalist Megyn Kelly and Alex Jones

Megyn Kelly's deeply controversial interview with Alex Jones aired Sunday night-and although a sizable chunk of her Sunday Night segment on Jones and his Infowars media operation was devoted to explaining why NBC would give airtime to a man who has claimed the Sandy Hook mass shooting was a hoax, some critics were unconvinced. In a Boston Globe opinion piece headlined "Megyn Kelly's interview with a sweaty, stammering Alex Jones wasn't worth it", University of ME journalism professor Michael J. Socolow criticized Kelly for being unable to glean any new information from Jones, arguing that the piece "lacked real news value".

60 Minutes beat Kelly in overall audience, delivering 5.31 million viewers.

Kelly's interview with Jones underwent changes as the call to cancel grew louder.

"Sunday Night" averaged 3.5 million viewers, down from 6.5 million for the debut episode, which featured Kelly's interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The episode finally aired Sunday, averaging 3.5 million viewers, a 0.5 rating among adults 18-49 and a 0.7 rating among adults 25-54. The local NBC affiliate in CT that serves the area where the shooting took place refused to air the interview.

While Mr. Jones apologized in May for peddling two other baseless conspiracy theories - one involving a D.C. pizza parlor, the other an Idaho-based yogurt factory - he has not apologized for calling the Sandy Hook shooting a hoax and claims that his views on the tragedy have been misconstrued.

Kelly challenged Jones from the start, introducing him as a "radical conspiracy theorist" and promising to confront him on his "notorious lie" about Sandy Hook.

One Newtown parent did appear on Kelly's program: Neil Heslin, whose 6-year-old son, Jesse Lewis, was killed. In response to criticism, Kelly invited parents to participate in the segment, an offer that one father accepted.

Relatives of the shooting victims have called Jones' comments hurtful and said he has encourage people to harass them. There were still many on both sides of the aisle who refused to watch the interview or saw the interview itself as reckless, but others praised Kelly for exposing Jones to the world.
