  • Secret Service says it doesn't have any Trump tapes

"I think the President made it clear what his intention is on Friday", said Spicer when asked if the American people deserve to know whether Comey was lying to the Senate.

A follow-up statement by White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer revealed no new details.

Trump has been coy about whether any recordings exist of his private conversations with Comey, who was dismissed by the president in May.

Prior to Comey's June 6 testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee, Trump tweeted a message to the former FBI Director, cautioning him about the possibility of any possible tapes that existed.

"It appears, from a review of Secret Service's main indices, that there are not records pertaining to your request", the agency told the Journal in a letter.

Both Trump and his staff have yet to give a definitive answer on the existence of recording devices at the White House.

As the Wall Street Journal noted, while the Secret Service installed recording systems for former presidents John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon, such recordings could also have been created or maintained by other means.

The Journal filed a Freedom of Information Act request for any audio or written transcripts of Trump's conversations.

But some, have questioned whether Trump is just bluffing about the tapes. Grassley's office said the letter is in response to a recent letter from Feinstein requesting that the committee seek details from senior Federal Bureau of Investigation leadership about Comey's interactions with President Donald Trump before he was sacked.

"Oh, you're going to be very disappointed when you hear the answer, don't worry", said Trump. If he did make the tapes and hands them over, he better hope they prove his version of the facts, and not Comey's. It was this leak - the leak Trump that had asked Comey to drop the Flynn investigation - that prompted Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to recuse himself from the case and appoint Bob Mueller as special counsel.

Grassley said Comey's dismissal and Comey's testimony on Lynch should be looked at together, noting that Comey "took the opportunity in his testimony to clear his own name by denouncing as false the administration's claims that the FBI rank-and-file had lost confidence in Mr. Comey's leadership in the wake of the Clinton email investigation".
