The nation's best young spellers are gathering in Maryland for the annual Scripps spelling bee starting Wednesday.

As for the national competition, he's trying to keep a level head about it. It's certainly more understandable than New Mexico's "banana", which sounds just like it's spelled. The test goes a long way toward determining who will be among the 50 or so spellers to advance beyond the preliminary rounds. The final round of the National Spelling Bee is scheduled for Thursday from 8:30 p.m.to 10:30 p.m. For eligibility in this year's competition, "The speller must not have reached his/her 15th birthday on or before August 31, 2016".

Last year, she finished tied for 22nd in the national contest. The home-schooled kindergartner from Tulsa, Oklahoma, is the third 6-year-old to make it to the bee since 2012, but she's 5 months younger than the previous record-holder, and she was just 5 when she qualified.
