Frenchmen claim cure for WannaCry-infected computers

21 May, 2017, 15:27 | Author: Lloyd Doyle

The leaks, and the global WannaCry ransomware attack that they led to, have renewed debate over how and when intelligence agencies should disclose vulnerabilities used in cyber spying programs so that businesses and consumers can better defend themselves. The list of victims is pretty long which include top notch business companies, hospitals, telecommunications, banks and more. However, one should be aware at least aware of what he/she is up against. Therefore, according to HHS, the presence of ransomware often requires a health care organization to implement its incident response procedures, and may require it to notify customers if "there is high risk of unavailability of [protected health information], or high risk to the integrity of the data".

Unlike typical ransomware, there is no evidence that WannaCry is being distributed via phishing schemes, a spam campaign, or through compromised ads. What does it do? Let us first understand how the United States taxpayer ended up subsidising this global criminal operation.

Whenever possible, keep data encrypted, whether in transit or stationary. "Paying a ransom does not guarantee the victim will regain access to their data".

As the most-connected nation on Earth-with our military command and electric power grid both fully integrated electronically-the U.S.is more vulnerable to cyber attacks than any other country.

In August, a mysterious group calling itself the Shadow Brokers dumped a set of exploits - or hacking tools - online. Networks of computers, are particularly vulnerable because the ransomware is spread through standard file sharing technology used by PCs.

WannaCry encrypts victims' computer files and displays a message demanding ransoms to be paid in the digital currency Bitcoin before people can get their files back. After 72 hours, the ransom went up to $600.

WannaCry appears to target mainly enterprises rather than consumers: Once it infects one machine, it silently proliferates across internal networks which can connect hundreds or thousands of machines in large firms, unlike individual consumers at home.

Earlier this morning, "WannaCry" was also reported to have attacked some parts of India as well. In our day-to-day lives, it seems WannaCry Ransomware Virus has affected our lives if not our computers.

This is especially so considering Microsoft reportedly knew, thanks to the NSA, that vulnerabilities were now in the open, and the fact that it issued patches for supported versions of Windows - but left unsupported users out in the cold - until Microsoft was forced to issue an "emergency patch" for XP users, by which time it was too late for many of those already affected by Wannacry.

How do I protect my company from a ransomware attack?

Wannakey was able to successfully scour the memory of an infected XP machine and extract the p and q variables that the secret key was based on. Secondly, you should probably start backing up all your sensitive data on an immediate basis, so even if the ransomware has attacked your computer, your data will be saved. The improved version can not be stopped with a first kill switch, and multiple reports suggest that the new version does not have this kill switch. Chances are, this won't be the last ransomware attack we ever hear of. However, there is no third-party decryption available at the moment. Even then, coverage may depend on whether one or more policies cover the cost of the company's investigation, fix of network machines, business interruption loss and the actual ransom amount. "For them, patching end-points is not a regular routine, as you would see in say, the banking industry".
