Takeaways From The Georgia 6 Special Election

Democrat Jon Ossoff came within a hair's breadth of dealing a major blow to President Trump Tuesday night, leading a crowded field of nearly a dozen Republicans but falling just short of winning a Georgia Congressional seat outight.

"Despite major outside money, FAKE media support and eleven Republican candidates, BIG "R" win with runoff in Georgia", the President tweeted late on Tuesday.

Democrat Jon Ossoff, a 30-year-old former congressional aide fueled by a colossal fundraising haul from out-of-state donors, came within two percentage points of an outright majority win Tuesday in an 18-candidate field in Georgia's traditionally Republican 6th Congressional District.

He published a similar message last week, after Republicans were forced to scramble to win a congressional special election in a ruby-red Kansas district.

Democrat Jon Ossoff almost won Tuesday night's special election outright thanks largely to voters angry over the presidency of Donald Trump.

In addition, Ossoff has also used anti-Trump sentiment, with the slogan "Make Trump Furious", to power his campaign, during which he also focused on the growing worry among Republicans that his victory could have a chilling effect on congressional races in future.

Trump recorded a robocall prior to the election urging Republicans to vote, warning constituents that Ossoff would raise taxes, destroy their health care and "flood our country with illegal immigrants".

Q: Voters who are Democratic are so energized and really getting out to the polls that the idea that a Democrat in the thick of a Republican Georgia could potentially win was just as big of a deal as Scott Brown being able to win as a Republican in MA. "Glad to be of help!" he tweeted. But the president called to congratulate her Wednesday morning, and Handel said she hoped he would come to campaign for her.

National Republican groups spent millions of dollars painting Ossoff as a neophyte who does not live in the area he aims to represent. "That no matter what the outcome is tonight, whether we take it all or we fight on, we have defied the odds".

The White House press secretary called the election "a big loss" for Democrats, because Ossoff's vote "pretty much tracks" Hillary Clinton's losing performance in the district in 2016. "I mean look, all Republicans, it's all hands on deck for us".

Gov. Nathan Deal has endorsed Karen Handel for the 6th District seat to replace former U.S. Rep. Tom Price, her campaign announced Thursday.

With all precincts reporting, Democrat Jon Ossoff led the crowded field of 18 candidates with 48 percent of the vote.

In losing on Tuesday, Democrats now have an uphill battle going forward in their races headed into the midterms.
