Umpire Dale Scott takes foul tip to facemask, leaves Jays-Orioles game

16 April, 2017, 00:33 | Author: Lula Armstrong

The Blue Jays are 6-2 in Estradas last 8 starts vs. Orioles, the Orioles are 27-57 in the last 84 meetings in Toronto and the under is 11-1 in the last 12 meetings.

Over the course of the first 10 games, the Jays had just one four-run inning and five others in which they scored a pair.

Toronto brought the winning run to the plate in the ninth before closer Zach Britton struck out Steve Pearce to lock down his fifth save.

This week, Jays Journal writers take a look at the Blue Jays' window for contention, and how the start of the 2017 season may influence the future of the organization.

Meanwhile, Alec Asher had completely shutdown the Blue Jays lineup through six innings, scattering three baserunners with the best chance to score being in the first inning when they put two on with two out. After the double, a wild pitch advanced Schoop to third but he struck out Ryan Flaherty to remove the possibility of a sac fly.

Kendrys Morales singled and went to third on a double by Troy Tulowitzki.

"He's one of the good guys, you know", Blue Jays Manager John Gibbons said (via CBC Sports).

A solo shot by Smoak in the fourth inning gave Toronto a 3-1 lead.

Kevin Gausman (1-0) pitched six innings for his first victory in nine career appearances at Rogers Centre. Toronto answered with two in the bottom half to lead for the first time in 35 innings, but the Orioles reclaimed the advantage by going deep twice in the fifth. Pinch-runner Craig Gentry stole second, moved to third on a fly out by Hyun Soo Kim and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Schoop. It was his third homer of the season.

Edwards Jr. had yet to allow a run in 4 1/3 innings this season, allowing just one hit while striking out four. Right-hander Dominic Leone came on and recorded two quick outs.

Smith's blast was his second homer of the season. Struggling catcher Russell Martin singled in the ninth and Devon Travis ended an 0-for-29 hitless streak with an RBI single in the frame.

Sanchez, who is expected to share time with Austin Hedges and Luis Torrens, and Quackenbush were with the team for Friday night's game at Atlanta.

While there is some truth to the call for patience over two bad weeks in the first month of the season, you can bet these are nervous times in the Jays front office.

Sanchez's effort was pedestrian by his lofty standards.

In his previous start, a no-decision against the New York Yankees, he allowed only one hit but walked seven.

After Gausman left, Darren O'Day and Brad Brach each worked a scoreless inning. The Orioles are relying on an offense that produced 20 runs in their last three games and five or more runs in four of their last seven games.
