New companion wins fans as Peter Capaldi's last Doctor Who series begins

Doctor Who newcomer Pearl Mackie has said it is "about time" the show featured an openly gay character as the Time Lord's official companion.

Capaldi has announced he is quitting the show and will pass the baton to his yet-to-be-announced successor in this year's Christmas special. Whovians who are over 21 can drink according to these rules during BBC America's premiere on Saturday. "He's also just a really lovely guy".

At the time, she was starring in the West End production of Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time and was picked up after the show with the intention of being whisked along the M4 to the Cardiff set, except they broke down after travelling less than a mile.

However, despite knowing what's going to happen to the Doctor in "Doctor Who" Season 10, Capaldi cleared out on the interview that he still doesn't know how it will come to that. "It's a show that went from sort of being a cult to being a kind of mainstream show".

In a nod to Doctor Who's long history, the season also reintroduces the Mondasian Cybermen, in their original design, for the first time since their debut in 1966. It's a relaunch of the show that makes it easy for new viewers to jump in.

I just thought, you know, while you're enjoying it-leave.
I instantly disliked the happy energy that she was beaming out of the screen at me, and I wasn't liking this new assistant at all from the first thirty-seconds; exactly like I didn't like Donna Noble from the first thirty-seconds.

When did you get the storytelling bug yourself? Extra points if they involve Missy/The Master because you know it's probably their fault. I didn't want to be phoning it in. I love stuff like that.

Capaldi is in the unusual position of having gone from playing one cult-favourite character - government spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in political satire The Thick of It - to another, the Doctor. And he had already created one iconic character, the foul-mouthed spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in the political sitcom "The Thick of It".

Capaldi, however, doesn't think the difference is quite so pronounced as it seems. They aren't the real foes in the episode.

Her most recent stage role was in the West End production of the The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time, but she's also acted in The Crucible and several new plays. Mixing teen themes and tropes is the source both of humor and drama, as when characters argue about their relationship as monsters stand waiting, with surprising patience, to try to kill them. Mackie's doesn't play her knowledge of science-fiction too over-the-top either; it comes across as more offhanded so when she suggests an odd puddle is an alien, it's doesn't come across as a "look how quirky I am" line.
