  • Search underway for gunman after Texas deputy constable shot

The fallen officer is identified as 30-year veteran Assistant Chief Deputy Clinton Greenwood. There was no word on the suspect, who is presumed to still be on the run after the shooting at 7 a.m.

Investigators said the deputy constable was shot in the neck and radioed for help, reportedly saying "I'm bleeding out".

Greenwood was shot outside the courthouse without any apparent warning.

"My heart goes out to the family and friends of Assistant Chief Deputy Greenwood and the Harris County law enforcement community in the wake of this heinous murder", Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement.

Greenwood received his law license in the 1980s and worked for the Harris County district attorney's office.

Following the shooting, the courthouse, several nearby business and Sterling High School were placed on lockdown as the manhunt for the shooter continued.

As of late morning, no suspect had been found and officials did not say if Greenwood was specifically targeted.

Lt. Steve Dorris with the Baytown Police Department told KTRK the shooting was intentional but police are still trying to determine a motive.
