Salt Lake City's Nathan Chen in sixth at figure skating worlds

"My free skate was good", said Medvedeva, unbeaten in 10 consecutive competitions.

"I think you just came up with the question of the year", Fernandez said, prompting laughter.

"But if you do great jumps, but you don't have the skating, you should not be there".

But blended in with all the jumps was his intricate footwork, sublime spins and inventive choreography - skills that sets him apart from the new breed of skaters who like packing their programs with high-scoring jumps.

Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov of Russian Federation achieved 219.03 to take their first world medal with bronze.

On Wednesday, before a raucous crowd at Hartwell Arena that included several dozen Canadian flags, she was fierce and fearless in her first world appearance since 2014.

Recent Russian stars have tended to burn brightly for a year, then struggle, but Medvedeva has gone from strength to strength since winning the world title last year. "Lots of excitement and joy, but also a bit of tension when you think, 'Okay, everybody is watching me, '" said the Italian skater, reflecting on her performance.

Osmond, 21, scored 218.13, and 19-year-old Daleman 213.52 for their first world medals to put Canada back on the women's podium for the first time since 2009. Though known for roaring in free skates, the 2016 World silver medalist singled the back half of her planned triple flip-triple toe loop combination and later underrotated her triple Salchow and triple flip.

"I just felt so relaxed and so confident going into this program", Daleman said, admitting that until recently "I didn't really trust or believe in myself". And despiting sitting seventh, American Ashley Wagner (69.04) feels she can better her silver a year ago.

Russia's Anna Pogorilaya fell three times on landings and dropped from fourth place to 13th in the final standings. And she's only seven points from second.

It was also the first time Canada had won two podium places in the women's competition.

Canadian ice dancing darlings Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir are poised to capture their third title at the world figure skating championships.

The Canadians scored a record 82.43 points to a Prince medley, and beat their own short dance world record by nearly two points. They last competed at the worlds in 2013.

"We made our best performance today and we were ourselves", Han said. "When I came back to the ice rink I just wanted to enjoy every day".

"You're feeling the butterflies and you're trying to eat lunch and it won't go down".

"We're so proud with how we skated at this World Championships", Maia Shibutani said.

Two-time defending champions Papadakis and Cizeron of France, who train under the same Canadian coaches as Virtue and Moir in Montreal, are second with 76.89.

United States' Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue posted 76.53 points for third.

The Paed couple also promised to watch the Free Skating event in the weekend with a bigger Filipino group even if the tickets for the event are already nearly sold out.
