Europe Takes Issue with Israeli New Settlement Plan

03 April, 2017, 00:31 | Author: Gregory Stephens

Gaza, (Alresalah.ps)- Israeli cabinet has unanimously voted in favor of construction of the regime's first new settlement in the occupied Palestinian territories in 25 years, drawing strong condemnation from Palestinians.

Earlier in the day, the Israeli prime minister said the new settlement was meant to house the residents of Amona, a wildcat outpost in the occupied West Bank that was evacuated under a court order in February.

The Zionist entity's recent approval of a first settlement in the occupied West Bank in 20 years has been met with strong denunciations from major European governments. The land in question is near the illegal settlements of Eli, Givat Haroeh and Adei, said the Times of Israel, which noted that that it would be used for building more settlement housing units.

It added as a caveat that new homes would be permitted to be built outside current settlement boundaries only if legal, security, or topographical limitations did not allow adherence to those guidelines.

Netanyahu is expected to comply with the White House's wishes.

Furthermore, Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit denounced the new settlement bid, noting that it "clearly showed that Israel isn't a true partner for achieving peace, and is captive in the hands of radical settlers".

The Prime Minister's Office said Thursday that any future construction would be limited to existing settlement boundaries or adjacent to them. This promise, said an American official, was made before Donald Trump set out his expectations about Israeli settlements, the implication being that in this case Netanyahu is not challenging Trump's call for restraint.

"Going forward. the Israeli government has made clear that Israel's intent is to adopt a policy regarding settlement activity that takes President Trump's concerns into consideration".

Jordan on Saturday condemned Israel's plan to build a new settlement in the West Bank, saying the move further undermines peace efforts, the state-run Petra news agency reported.
