  • Actress Emma Watson attends the special screening of Disney's live-action adaptation

The musical love story's opening weekend collection beat Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($166.1 million) and Iron Man 3 ($174.1 million).

The re-telling of the animated classic was originally scheduled to start showing on March 16 but was postponed after Disney refused to edit the film. Many expect it to become as successful as previous films such as Cinderella and The Jungle Book.

New versions of Dumbo, The Little Mermaid, Mulan and The Lion King, among others, are on the way. Dave Hollis, head of distribution for Disney said that nostalgia is a very powerful driver for the current and upcoming films. "But you don't get to $170 million just because of nostalgia, of course, you have to ultimately make these movies great".

Again, if this is a movie you liked growing up, you'll probably like the live-action remake.

The film's characters include manservant LeFou, who plays the sidekick to villain Gaston, and, according to director Bill Condon, "is confused about his sexuality".

Though many applauded the character's subtle twist as overdue progress, some derided it. A drive-in cinema in the USA state of Alabama has also cancelled screenings of the film.

With laws against homosexuality, Malaysia's Film Censorship Board had approved "Beauty and the Beast" for a P13 rating with the requested cuts, Abdul Halim Abdul Hamid, the film board chairman, said in a text message last week. An appeal is to be heard this week. It took in $180 million overseas, including $44.8 million in China, Disney said. Thanks to Beauty and the Beast's success, the 26-year-old is receiving a Harry Potter sized paycheck. Disney, the studio even bested itself.

Kong in its second weekend fell to number 2 with a gross of $28.8 million, this brings the films total U.S. box office to $110.1 million after 10 days of play. Overseas, the VFX-heavy feature made an additional $38.5 million for a total of $259.3 million worldwide.
