Another person in the food business, Abu Bakar regretted that government is silent over the issue and it is left for the meat sellers to run from pillar to post to get their issues settled. "In Uttar Pradesh, the action is only being taken against illegal slaughterhouses".

"It is not as if only Muslims consume meat, one of the largest consumers of meat are Hindus".

State BJP leader Mazhar Abbas appealed to meat sellers saying that only the illegal shops and slaughter houses would face government action and the geneuine ones don't need to worry. "If the government thinks that they are pleasing a community by attacking another, then this is bad", he added.

Meat sellers, especially mutton vendors, today kept their shops closed on the first day of their indefinite strike against the statewide crackdown on illegal and mechanised slaughter houses. "Licenced slaughter houses are requested to stick to the norms", Health Minister Siddhartha Nath Singh told reporters here.

"We are acting only against illegal abattoirs". Those who have licenses have nothing to fear. We have advised the sellers who have stocks in their shops to sell till tonight and then shut shops from Saturday morning, " said Md Rizwan Siddiqui, Lucknow Murga Mandi Samiti member.

The Minister further said it was also a message to officers not to overstep their jurisdiction and the mandate given by the State government. They also say that despite applying for licences they are yet to receive them. The Minister further clarified that no orders have been issued by the government to close down shops selling chicken and eggs, urging people not to believe such news on social media. After coming to power, the new UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered the closure of illegal slaughterhouses and strict enforcement of the ban on cow smuggling to fulfil a key electoral promise, which led to their closure.

As per estimates, the country exports meat products worth Rs 26,685 crore annually and with the closure of slaughter houses in UP it will come down to half, the association functionary lamented.
