Sen. Casey says he won't vote for Gorsuch

Pennsylvania's senior US senator has decided he will not back Judge Neil Gorsuch's nomination to the Supreme Court.

Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., will vote against the Neil Gorsuch nomination, and join Democrats' filibuster in a bid to block the U.S. Supreme Court nominee.

His opposition could force Republicans, who control 52 seats in the Senate, to either round up eight Democratic votes or change the rules - the "nuclear option" - to eliminate the 60-vote requirement for confirmation. But Republicans, who hold a majority in the Senate, could change the rules to end debate with a simple majority of votes, 51.

"I'm absolutely a "yes" vote, barring some completely unanticipatable, shocking new discovery that obviously I am quite confident will not occur", Toomey told reporters. He said Gorsuch was not "a neutral legal mind, but someone with a deep seated conservative ideology". Such a deal would give Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer a preemptive veto over the next Supreme Court nominee.

"Life changes and the originalism that the days when the Constitution was written ... they bring them backward in terms of rights women did not have", Ms. Feinstein said.

But it remains unlikely Democrats will be able to keep Gorsuch from the Supreme Court bench, since the GOP seems united on the judge and has the nuclear option in its back pocket.

On Tuesday, in a surprising note, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper urged caution to democrats thinking of supporting Gorsuch, recalling President Obama's Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland. John Roberts, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan were all confirmed with more than 60 votes. Bob Casey both said Thursday they'd vote no on Gorsuch's nomination.

"While most of us will never have the opportunity to appear before the United States Supreme Court, each of us has a strong interest in supporting the confirmation of highly qualified jurists who will maintain the Supreme Court's commitment to the rule of law", the ME lawyers wrote in their letter to Collins and King. Therefore, some argue, the filibuster should be preserved for a future Trump nominee-one who might replace one of the court's liberals, such as 84-year-old Ruth Bader Ginsburg or 78-year-old Stephen Breyer.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has suggested that Democrats would attempt to delay the Gorsuch nomination because of the FBI investigation into potential connections between the Trump campaign and Russian officials. "I suggest we fulfill our responsibility to this nominee and the country by considering his nomination in the manner his predecessor deserved but was denied".
