Jets agree to deal wiith Josh McCown to address QB void

  • Quarterback Geno Smith has agreed to terms with the New York Giants

A 14-year veteran, McCown has a great chance to be the Jets starter in 2017 and will compete against Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg.

McCown met with the Jets over the weekend, but left Sunday without a deal.

The Jets needed to address their quarterback issue, with Ryan Fitzpatrick wearing out his welcome in the Big Apple and Geno Smith (thankfully) moving on to the Jets' MetLife Stadium co-tenant, the New York Giants.

Having McCown in the mix now gives the Jets several options. He spent his last two seasons with the Browns, where he threw for 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 13 appearances. They'll need to lean on the veteran, who already has an ally in the coaching room, new quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates.

McCown will likely be the opening-day starter, regardless of what the coach says about an open competition, because logic suggests that if Bowles is really honest about trying to win every game, he can't trot out either Petty or Hackenberg just yet.

McCown, 37, played three seasons with the Bears, including a career-saving year in 2013. Last month at the NFL Scouting Combine, the Jets general manager said "all options are on the table" when it comes to finding a quarterback. He signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the following offseason.

McCown played in just five games last season and was limited by a shoulder injury. He is 18-42 in 60 National Football League starts. Despite Petty having started four games to Hackenberg's none, the former Penn State passer looks to be set to remain as a developmental player.
