Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney expected to rejoin Everton this summer

  • Wayne Rooney can still offer Jose Mourinho plenty at Manchester United says Gary Neville

Wayne Rooney and Everton are both keen on a reunion this summer and the deal is "likely to happen", according to a compelling report in The Independent.

Rooney has lost his place in Jose Mourinho's team this season, and it appears as though his days as a starter for United are over.

West Ham would reportedly be interested in rivalling Everton to sign Wayne Rooney this summer should Manchester United let him leave.

Rooney will get to play first team football again, after achieving nearly everything possible at Old Trafford.

Speculation over the forward's future has been rife in recent months amid reports his agent had flown to China to discuss a possible move to the Chinese Super League in February, per Sky Sports.

Everton has also been mentioned, but is Rooney a better option than the team's current forwards?

However, it seems Rooney would prefer to stay in the Premier League, opting to return to the club he started with in Merseyside.

This move would arguably make sense for all parties.

West Ham slipped to a third successive Premier League defeat following a 3-2 home loss to champions Leicester on Saturday.

West Ham were aiming to sign a big name striker last summer as they looked to mark their first season at the London Stadium in style. Prior to the permanent signing of Romelu Lukaku, former boss Roberto Martinez attempted to bring Rooney back but was unsuccessful in his efforts.

The striker will probably not want to take a cut in salary with only a few seasons of his career remaining, and, given his proclaimed love for United, moving overseas would seem like the only possible outcome.
