  • Netflix Replaces Ratings With Thumbs Up/Down

Netflix is changing its ratings system, reports Variety, and gearing up to replace the existing stars with thumbs ups and downs.

If you consider yourself a couch critic and have spent far too much time on Netflix agonizing over whether or not a certain TV show or movie deserved three or four stars, this news might be disappointing.

The thumb system was previously tested out on "thousands of members" past year, and it will be rolling out for everyone in the next few weeks.

Some people have insisted that the streaming company chose to ditch the rating system because of the alleged single-star harassment.

For its part, Netflix hopes that this change will actually be better for users than worse. "But we want to move to a system where it's really clear, when members rate, that it's for them, and to keep on making the Netflix experience better and better".

After spending a large amount of time sending out customer surveys, analyzing viewer habits and conducting many, MANY experiments with lab rats critiquing various cheeses, Netflix has announced it will be getting rid of its five-star rating system. The VP of Product, Todd Yellin, told press on Thursday that the new thumb based system had been tested with a large number of users, and resulted in a 200% increase in rating participation than the star rating system. Apparently, there was a pattern found in users that used the 1-5 star rating system, that rendered said system less than accurate. This system will be personalised based on which titles a user has given a "thumbs up" or a "thumbs down" to in the past. The system thinks you hated the movie.

Netflix will also add a feature which they call "per cent match". That means a close fit will show something in the 90 percent range, while something that you probably won't like will hover around 50 or 60 percent. Netflix will also reportedly start showing users an algorithm-based percentage match for each show and movie, giving people an idea of how likely they are to enjoy it.
