Oscar Awards 2017: Our Predictions for the 89th Academy Awards winners

23 February, 2017, 00:31 | Author: Courtney Perry

While you are all geared up to watch the 89th Academy Awards, the question arises, where do we watch it. It's highly unlikely and we wouldn't advise changing your Oscar pool but here are three reasons why Moonlight could pull off one of the biggest Oscars upsets of all time.

8 - number of awards shows Jimmy Kimmel has hosted before the Oscars, including the 2016 Emmys and the American Music Awards five times. "Hidden Figures", however, has managed to make the most money at the box office in North America with $144.5 million, while Amy Adams science fiction drama "Arrival" has made $195.3 million worldwide but only $99.9 million stateside. Moonlight's win was an encouraging show of support for that film on the heels of its win at last weekend's USC Scripter Awards. Disney's new animated film "Moana" is up for two Oscars with Best Original Song and Best Animated Picture.

Denzel Washington and Casey Affleck are knotted in a tight race for Best Actor, and the same can be said for Emma Stone and Isabelle Huppert for Best Actress. It's also a technically impressive, handsome film that's about struggling artistry, which the Academy has repeatedly embraced (hence the recent Best Picture wins for "The Artist" and "Birdman").

Although Mahershala Ali did not win at the Golden Globes or at the BAFTAs but he has a very strong chance of clinching the golden statue for his role in Moonlight. A close second - and a more deserving victor, in my opinion - would be Kenneth Lonergan's Manchester by the Sea for capturing an ordinary scenario and making it genuine, believable and touching.

Getting to the 2017 Academy Awards is easy.

Oh yeah, you also need to either know someone or go back in time and contribute to one of these aforementioned hit films because tickets are almost impossible to come by, otherwise.

For favorite "La La Land", which took director Damien Chazelle six years to get made, and indie challenger "Moonlight", made on such a tight budget the cast and crew shared one trailer, the tortured path to the Academy Awards has only added to their allure.

In the movie, Joe Buck (Jon Voight), a naïve Texas boy, acts on the bright idea that if he moves to New York City, rich, lonely women will fall over themselves to pay him for sex. Ryan Gosling fans, be prepared.

La La Land is favoured in nine categories including best director and best actress. Meryl Streep earned her 20th career nomination for her performance as a lovably awful opera singer in "Florence Foster Jenkins", Ruth Negga excelled as one half of an interracial couple during the civil rights movement in "Loving", and Natalie Portman shined bright as former first lady Jackie Kennedy in "Jackie". "Just do the best you can do".
