Man Who Admitted To Killing Former NFL Player Released From Custody

03 December, 2016, 09:33 | Author: Lula Armstrong

(Michael DeMocker /NOLA.com The Times-Picayune via AP). McKnight had an injury to his left hand and a wound in his right shoulder.

McKnight was considered the No. 1 running back recruit in the country when he came out of John Curtis Christian School in Louisiana in 2006 and signed with the University of Southern California, where he played under Pete Carroll. The sheriff said Gasser and Joe McKnight - a star running back at USC who played four seasons in the National Football League - exchanged words after a traffic incident.

When later asked by a reporter during the press conference to clarify if the state's "Stand Your Ground" law played a role in the proceedings of the investigation, Normand said "it is one of the issues that looms on the horizon as it relates to ..."

In the 2006 incident, a man observed a truck driving erratically and called a number on the truck, speaking to a man later identified as Gasser.

It "began on Holiday Drive in New Orleans and ended in the service station at the intersection of Holmes Blvd. and Berhman Hwy., in Terrytown", the Sheriff's Office said in an email.

"He was always determined to get better - better as a football player and as a man - and I thought he did that". The man also called a number on the side of truck to report if the truck was being driven unsafely.

The misdemeanor charge of simple battery was ultimately dismissed. Grimble was a redshirt freshman in 2010 and declared for the NFL Draft after the 2013 campaign, never playing with McKnight. The apparent road rage incident started on the Crescent City Connection, heading towards Jefferson Parish.

"Help me understand this shit", New York Giants player Damon Harrison wrote on Twitter.

"You just - certain people you just learn from just by being around and I feel like Joe was that type of guy".

Normand said he was revealing these details to address reports that witnesses saw Gasser standing over McKnight with a gun as the 28-year-old tried to apologize. No charges have been filed.

The N.A.A.C.P has pledged to demonstrate their disagreement of the release of Mr. Gasser peacefully.

"We felt as of last night out of an abundance of caution we did not want to get to that threshold in that point in time", Normand said of the decision not to arrest the shooter. Authorities released Gasser, 54, after questioning him overnight.

Barbara Franklin said Friday that relatives are "trying to find out our own selves" more about what happened.

NAACP leaders and community activists are calling for answers from local law enforcement after the release of suspect Ronald Gasser.

Normand said Gasser, whose hometown was not immediately released, stayed at the scene and relinquished his weapon to responding officers. He didn't say which man cut off the other. Normand was accompanied by Jefferson Parish Councilman Mark Spears, who is black. He tells news media outlets Ronald Gasser hasn't been charged at this time and the shooting is still under investigation. The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Department has made it clear that Gasser "definitely" shot Joe McKnight but now there are questions about the circumstances leading up to the shooting.

The shooting happened at about 3 p.m. CST Thursday in Terrytown, a suburb of New Orleans, just across the Mississippi River.

Former NFL player Joe McKnight has been shot to death following an argument at an intersection with another motorist outside New Orleans. Normand also said he had received the protest organizers request that the office close a portion of the highway for their demonstration.

"The players are dispersed everywhere so it's very hard and that's why we want to do everything we possibly can to support the players, " he said. The Sheriff's Office characterized the deadly incident as "road rage" but declined to say who was the aggressor. Saints player Will Smith was killed in April.
